A new type of heartburn medication called esomeprazole, which is taken in the stomach and also the intestines, has been developed for use in women. But how did a US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) study show that the drug works as an effective anti-ulcer medicine in women?
In a study conducted by the British National Institute for Clinical Excellence (BNC), the drug was found to be effective in women taking the prescription anti-ulcer medicine Nexium, which is used in over 50 million patients worldwide.
“The drug has the potential to have an impact on women’s lives, and women’s health, by reducing their risk of developing a type of chronic liver disease in their lifetime,” said study co-author Dr. Preeta Doshi, of BNC, in a news release.
The study, which was co-sponsored by the European Society of Cardiology, the German Society for the History of Medicine, and the British Medical Association, showed that women taking the drug experienced fewer hospitalizations and had fewer re-hospitalizations than those taking a placebo, with a trend toward a more prolonged effect in those who took the drug. It is also important to note that women taking the drug should be monitored closely for side effects, such as abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting.
In this study, the researchers used a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study to evaluate the efficacy and safety of the drug in women at high risk of developing a type of chronic liver disease.
The results showed that women who took the drug had significantly fewer hospitalizations and re-hospitalizations than those who took a placebo. However, it was found that women who took the drug had a greater percentage of fewer deaths.
